London freesheets embark on recycling effort

London's free newspapers have started the long awaited roll-out of their recycling bins across the capital.

News International, Associated Newspapers and Westminster City Council have agreed a deal to pay for the installation of 70 newspaper recycling bins to be placed at 56 sites across the West End.

The three parties will be also responsible for the emptying and recycling of the expected 400 tonnes of free newspapers dumped by readers each year.

News International and Associated Newspapers' move exceeds both parties' commitment made last August to install 32 bins each. Westminster Council had threatened to restrict distribution of the papers within its boundaries if the parties had failed to agree a recycling deal.

The new bins are in addition to the 146 newspaper recycling bins that Westminster City Council already services
